Myopia Control at Eyeris Optometrist

Protecting Sight Today for a Healthier Tomorrow

Myopia is no longer just a matter of needing glasses. It’s becoming a global eye health concern and it's rising rapidly. It’s estimated that by 2050, half the world’s population will be myopic, with nearly 10% having high myopia.

Myopia (short-sightedness) occurs when the eyeball grows too long from front to back. This extra length causes light rays entering the eye to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it, making distant objects appear blurry. As the eye elongates, the retina, the thin, light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, stretches and becomes thinner, increasing the risk of eye diseases such as retinal tears, detachment, or myopic maculopathy:

  • On the left, the normal eye has light focusing directly on the retina.

  • On the right, the myopic eye is elongated, causing light to focus in front of the retina, stretching it.

At Eyeris Optometrist, we understand that controlling myopia, especially in children is about more than just clear vision.

It’s about protecting long-term eye health and preventing serious pathological risks such as:

  • Retinal detachment

  • Myopic macular degeneration

  • Glaucoma

  • Cataracts

These risks increase significantly as myopia progresses, which is why early intervention is key.

What Is Myopia Control?

Myopia control refers to evidence-based treatments designed to slow the progression of myopia in children and teenagers. Instead of just prescribing stronger glasses every year, we now have the tools to reduce how quickly a child’s vision deteriorates and potentially lower their lifetime risk of serious eye disease.

In myopia, central vision is blurred because light focuses in front of the retina, while peripheral rays focus behind it, signalling the eye to keep growing.

Myopia control lenses shift peripheral focus in front of the retina while keeping central vision clear. This reduces the signal for eye growth and helps slow myopia progression.

Our Myopia Control Solutions

At Eyeris Optometrist, we offer a comprehensive range of myopia control options, customised to your child’s needs and lifestyle.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) with Corneal Topography

These custom-made, rigid contact lenses are worn overnight and gently reshape the cornea during sleep. This results in clear, glasses-free vision by day and helps slow myopia progression.

Using corneal topography, we map the front surface of the eye with incredible precision to design lenses that are:

  • Individually tailored

  • Safe and comfortable

  • Closely monitored for effectiveness over time

Ortho-K is perfect for active kids, swimmers, or teens wanting to avoid daytime lenses or glasses.

Specialised Myopia Control Glasses - MiyoSmart

MiyoSmart lenses are an innovative, award-winning solution that look and feel like regular glasses but work actively to slow down eye growth. They use D.I.M.S. (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) Technology, clinically shown to reduce myopia progression by up to 60%.

Perfect for younger children or those not yet ready for contact lenses.

Myopia Control Soft Contact Lenses - MiSight & Abiliti

  • MiSight® 1 day lenses: Daily disposable lenses clinically proven to reduce the progression of myopia in children aged 8–12 at initiation.

  • Ability™ lenses: A new-generation soft lens specially designed for younger wearers, offering comfort with myopia control effectiveness.

Both options offer freedom from glasses and are great for kids comfortable with daily lens use.

Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops
