Is Your Child Seeing Their Full Potential?

Good Vision is Essential for Learning

Did you know that children learn more through their vision than all of their other senses combined?

From recognising faces and learning to read, to catching a ball and navigating the classroom, healthy vision is essential for every stage of a child's development.

Unfortunately, around 1 in 5 Australian children has an undetected vision problem.

Many children don't realise they aren't seeing clearly because they assume everyone sees the world the same way they do.

That's why regular eye examinations are one of the most important investments you can make in your child's future.

How Does a Child's Vision Develop?

A child's eyes and brain work together to develop vision from the moment they are born.

During the early years, vision develops in stages:

This development only occurs when the eyes provide the brain with clear, healthy visual information.

Why Early Detection Matters?

The first five to six years of life are the most important for visual development.

During this time, the brain is rapidly learning how to interpret what the eyes see. If vision is blurred or one eye isn't working properly, the brain may not develop normal vision.

Some childhood eye conditions become much harder or even impossible to fully correct if treatment is delayed.

The earlier a vision problem is identified, the better the outcome is likely to be.

Could Your Child Have a Vision Problem?

Children rarely complain about poor vision because they don't know what "normal" vision should look like.

Parents and teachers should watch for signs such as:

  • Frequent blinking

  • Squinting

  • Constant eye rubbing

  • Holding books or devices very close

  • Difficulty concentrating during reading or other visual tasks

  • Appearing unusually inattentive or "over-active"

  • One eye turning in or out

  • Abnormal eye movements or noticeable eye "shaking"

  • Persistent head tilting

  • An unusual colour or appearance of the eye

  • Complaints of headaches or blurred vision

These signs don't always mean your child has an eye problem but they are good reasons to arrange a comprehensive eye examination.

When Should Children Have Their Eyes Tested?

At Eyeris Optometrist, we recommend children have a comprehensive eye examination:

  • Before starting school

  • Whenever parents, carers or teachers have concerns about their vision

  • If you notice any of the warning signs listed above

  • Before confirming a learning disability diagnosis and treatment, as some vision problems may contribute to behaviours that resemble attention difficulties

Good vision provides the best opportunity for children to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Is a School Vision Screening Enough?

Many children participate in vision screening programs at school or kindergarten. These screenings are valuable because they can identify some children who need further assessment.

However, a vision screening is not the same as a comprehensive eye examination.

A school screening usually checks only a limited number of visual functions and may miss important conditions such as:

  • Long-sightedness or short-sightedness

  • Astigmatism

  • Eye focusing problems

  • Eye teaming and coordination issues

  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)

  • Eye health conditions

A comprehensive examination assesses not only how clearly your child sees, but also how well their eyes work together, how they focus, and the overall health of their eyes.

What Should Parents Do Next?

If you're concerned about your child's vision:

  • Watch for the signs listed above.

  • Book a comprehensive eye examination if you have any concerns.

  • Schedule an eye test before your child starts school.

  • Even if your child has passed a school vision screening, consider a full eye examination.

  • Arrange an eye examination before confirming a learning disability or beginning treatment to ensure vision is not contributing to learning or attention difficulties.

Early diagnosis can make a lifelong difference.
